Stewardship Calendar

Thank you for your interest in volunteering to keep Portland's natural area parks healthy, beautiful, and safe for people and wildlife!

Here are a few tips to get you ready for your next stewardship event.

  • While most stewardship events do not require an RSVP, please check the description to make sure that advanced registration is not required.
  • PP&R staff or the partner group liaison will be on site to greet you and will provide gloves, tools, training for the day's activity, and a snack to keep you going.
  • In order to ensure your comfort and safety, please remember to dress for the weather, wear close-toed shoes, bring a water bottle, and be ready to get dirty!
  • Unless otherwise noted, all events are family friendly and all ages are welcome to participate. However, children must be accompanied and supervised by an adult for the duration of the event.
  • While groups are welcome to join many of our regularly scheduled stewardship events, please contact the event coordinator listed in the description before arriving with a large group. This will ensure that there are enough gloves and tools for everyone to work. We are also available to schedule special service events at your group's convenience during the week or on weekends. Learn more about programs for groups.

PLEASE NOTE: IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE TO FULFILL COURT REQUIREMENTS, PLEASE CALL 503-823-5121. YOU MUST BE REGISTERED WITH OUR PROGRAM BEFORE UNDERTAKING ANY COMMUNITY SERVICE.

Description

National Day of Service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.!

Indian Creek Natural Area (Outer Southeast) – ivy removal

Monday, January 21, 9:00 AM-1:00 PM

Join Johnson Creek Watershed Council and Portland Parks & Recreation to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Junior’s life and work to advance civil rights. Dr. Martin Luther King Junior dedicated his life to service and selflessness. To honor his legacy, we will participate in reflective conversation and activities in addition to our site enhancement work.  If you have a favorite quote, story or photo of Dr. King that you wish to share, feel free to bring it with you. We’ll start the day by sharing with each other (if you wish) how Dr. King has inspired you. Why do you serve your community through volunteering? What does upholding civil rights and social justice give back to the community, and how does this reveal itself in our shared natural areas? These are just some of the questions we hope to reflect on in dialogue with each other, as we remove ivy and help to protect the native plants and trees in this shared public space. Everyone is welcome, and no experience necessary! Wear long thick pants, a long-sleeved shirt and sturdy shoes. Wear warm clothes—it can get cold and windy! Bring a water bottle, rain gear and sunhat. Instruction, tools, gloves, water, coffee/tea and snacks provided. Children welcome and must be accompanied by an attentive adult.

Meet at: 10368 SE Knapp St, Portland, OR 97266

Tri-met: Bus #19 (I-205 Overpass stop) or Green line MAX (Flavel stop). Pass under the I-205 Overpass, then walk southeast 200 feet on Mt. Scott Blvd. (Flavel becomes Mt. Scott Blvd.), then east on SE Knapp for ¼ mile. Indian Creek is on your right.
